City’s large-scale Primary Sanitary Sewer Trunk project now underway; map of route available

The City of North Battleford has started its Primary Sanitary Sewer Trunk Upgrade mega project and released a map detailing the route.

Construction is beginning on the new force main and new sewage pumping station, as well as the decommissioning of the old sewage treatment plant to provide long-term sanitary service for the residents of North Battleford.

“This investment in infrastructure is needed for the continued growth of our city,” the city stated in its release. “Without this planned expansion to accommodate capacity, the current infrastructure would not be able to handle the growing North Battleford population. Additionally, with our changing climate, extreme weather events are becoming more regular. This infrastructure upgrade will protect residents and our environment.”

Communications administrator Dustin MacDonald said crews are currently working on installing the pipe starting at the Waste Water Treatment Plant moving towards the city to the Parsons Industrial Park area.

“We are urging residents to drive with caution, and be mindful of the construction vehicles and workers in the area,” MacDonald said in an email to battlefordsNOW.

MacDonald said any street closures related to the project will be posted on the city’s website.

The total $16.7 million infrastructure project is being funded in part by both the province and federal governments in a cost-share initiative through the New Building Canada Fund program.

The contract for the force main installation was awarded to Hamm Construction, while the contract for the sewage pumping station upgrade and the decommissioning of the old sewage treatment plant was awarded to Con-Tech General Contractors.

Work on the sewage force main began during the last week of May, with pipe arriving at the storage sites along the route. It is estimated that construction of the force main will continue until the end of 2021.

The city will provide updates on the project development on its website.
