Registration for 2021 Hazee Awards now open

Registration is now open for the 2021 Hazee Art Awards in the community.

An annual youth art competition for young artists from within a within a 100 kilometer radius of the Battlefords, the event is open to ages 7-20, and will be held in the community in the fall.

Though the event will not take place until October, curator and manager of galleries with the City of North Battleford, Leah Garven said registration is open now to allow for those interested in participating to have adequate time to complete a project for submission at this year’s event.

“We’re just trying to get the word out now, so the artists have time to create and do some work [on their project] over the summer for an entry,” she said.

The exhibition portion of the event will take place, with the submitted works available to view from Oct. 9 to 29, with the award ceremony to take place during that time. Art submissions from those participating must be submitted to the gallery by Oct. 3.

Artist of the Year will receive $500, runner-up $300, and for Creative Excellence, two artists will be awarded a prize of $100 each.

Though initially started in 2019, this will be just the second year of the Hazee Awards, after the 2020 celebration was ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic.

Garven said the Hazees are a great way to showcase some of the talent of the next generation of people making a creative impact in the community, while also recognizing their hard work and dedication to their craft.

“Not everyone is into team sports or music, and this art competition helps give artists something to look forward to, and work towards,” she said. “Artists are often working alone in the community or at home, and this is one way of showing the good stuff that happens out in the community.”

“Creativity just really enlivens the mind and helps activate a lot of positive things. So to be able to create opportunities for youth to make art, is something special.”

The Hazee Art Awards were established by Rob and Nora Rongve in honour of Hazel “Hazee” Asmussen, a local artist who passed away just over 10 years ago.
