Town installing barricade to prevent drivers from taking short cut over private field

May 10, 2021 | 2:30 PM

The Town of Battleford plans to install a permanent barricade at the edge of a field at one end of 5th Avenue West to prevent traffic from the Riverbend Crescent residential area and 5th Avenue West from taking a short cut across a privately owned field to access 35th Street West.

“Vehicles continue to get stuck and cause damage to this field,” public works manager Eric Bilanski said in his report at council’s recent meeting.

In August 2020, the town placed concrete parking blocks across the approach at 35th Street W.

But Bilanski said because there are no natural boundaries at the location, motorists continue to drive around them.

“The next best solution is to barricade off 5 Ave. W. at the Riverbend area,” he said.

Council approved administration’s recommendation to purchase some posts at a cost of $980 and run cable through them at 5th Ave. West near Riverbend. The town’s public work crews will complete the installation work.

Bilanski said some thought will be given to ensuring the barrier is long lasting and is also created to be aesthetically pleasing in some way.

He added the existing parking blocks on the 35 Street West side of the field will remain for the summer and will be removed in the fall.

Mayor Ames Leslie said the town received a few phone calls from residents and the RCMP about people cutting across this field, possibly in the process of a criminal act, so he is pleased a more secure barricade will be installed.

“It’s good to see it blocked off,” he said.
