Walk a Mile in Her Shoes coming up next month

Registration is now open for the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre’s (BASAC) fifth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser, which will take place next month.

Walk a Mile is an international event where men from the community are invited to come together, put on some red high heels and walk a literal mile to help raise awareness around gender-based violence. All proceeds raised will then go towards the BASAC prevention and outreach programming.

The local walk will be May 20 with registration at 5:30 p.m. and the event start at 6 p.m., beginning at Blend Restaurant in North Battleford.

Executive director of the BASAC, Amber Stewart said they are looking forward to the event again this year, following a milestone turnout in 2020.

“We usually have between 20 and 30 walkers, and last year’s event was actually our biggest yet, as we raised about $12,000,” Stewart said. “We’re hoping to grow again this year, and we’re looking forward to having another successful event with people out on the streets cheering on our brave guys as they walk again.”

Stewart said the organization is grateful for the continued support over the years, and all those in the community who make hosting the event possible through both sponsorships and participation.

“We wouldn’t be able to do it without the community support and we’re just thankful for all the guys who continue to show up and walk in this event,” Stewart said. “It’s really a fun thing and the community has been super supportive, so we just encourage people to come out and give it a shot. [Participants] only have to walk a few blocks in the shoes and then they can kick them off and have a little visit after.”

Masks will be required for this year’s event. Pizza will be available to participants following the walk, with raffle tickets available to purchase for a range of prizes donated by local businesses.

Those interested in taking part in this year’s Walk a Mile, are asked to register in advance, either individually or as a business. To learn more or register today, visit the BASAC website or find them on Facebook.
