City, town busy sweeping roads of debris this spring

The City of North Battleford and Town of Battleford crews are on the move doing a clean sweep of the streets this spring to improve the condition for drivers.

City of North Battleford roadways supervisor Colin Carriere said the work began last week, with work on the downtown core starting this week.

“We’ll be busy sweeping for the next couple of months with our spring clean. Right now we are focusing on getting the centres done of the main roads, the priority roads,” he said. “Once that’s done, then we’ll start branching out on to our regular parking-restriction schedule [locations] for residential areas.”

He is asking everyone to follow all signs throughout the city indicating restricted hours when parking is not permitted, or risk having their vehicle ticketed, as well as causing a lag in the sweeping process.

“We encourage people to follow the restrictions and keep their cars off the streets so we can do our job properly,” Carriere said. “I don’t want to see someone getting a ticket if they don’t have to. But the CSOs [community safety officers] are going to be out enforcing the parking restrictions.”

If all goes smoothly he is hoping the sweepers will be able to complete their work by early June.

For the gravel roads, such as in the three city industrial areas, crews grade these to smooth them out as required. For dust control, the city will apply product when a cost-share arrangement has been agreed up between the city and the individual or business making the request.

For the Town of Battleford, the sweeper has been out now for the last couple of weeks and is continuing work cleaning the roads of dirt and debris.

Town of Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie said as soon as the weather improves a bit then crews will be able to look after dust control measures.

“When it’s not so windy we’ll be getting started on an application of a dust control product on the streets,” he said.

Crews will focus on the Industrial Park, 5th Avenue, and some of the residential streets as well that are still graveled.

According to the town’s website, they are planning to apply calcium chloride to the service road in the industrial area at the current time.

Leslie said the town is looking into switching to a different type of dust control material for the future.

“We’re presently investigating a more efficient, effective product that’s a little bit more environmentally-friendly,” he said.

The town will further discuss dust control plans at its next council meeting.
