USask Indigenous Student Experience Days to take place next week

The University of Saskatchewan will be hosting their Indigenous Experience Days next week as an opportunity for students from Indigenous communities and high schools across Saskatchewan and beyond to get to know the university community.

Taking place virtually this year due to the pandemic, the Experience Days will run Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesday 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (April 13-14).

Participants will be able to learn about the degree programs offered at the university, as well as various student groups they can join once enrolled. It also serves as a way to meet other potential students, as well as professors and other staff.

Indigenous Student Liaison Officer with the University, Susan Shacter said the program, which was first introduced in 2015, has become a valuable way to highlight what the university can provide to prospective students.

“It’s so important for us to show off our community here and to help new students start building connections and growing relationships with the people here and with each other,” Shacter said. “The university might seem like a big place, but we hear so often that after students have an opportunity to get to know the campus and people, it really does feel like a community or second home.”

While this will be the first year the event is held online through a virtual format, Shacter said it comes with an opportunity for all interested to attend the event, and learn a bit about the campus and courses offered from wherever they might be located.

“The event [taking place] all online this year is honestly pretty exciting,” she said. “While we know we can’t completely replicate the in-person experience and the excitement of visiting campus for the first time, we’re excited to bring some of these experiences to the virtual space so participants who might not have been able to travel to Saskatoon to have this opportunity to learn about the university and meet some of the people in our community.”
