Motorcycle accident requires STARS landing

A motorist is recovering in hospital in Saskatoon after a highway crash west of the Battlefords on Highway 40 on April 6, which required a STARS helicopter.

According to the Battleford Fire Department, they received a 911 call shortly before 8:00 p.m. that evening that there had been a motorcycle accident two miles east of Sweetgrass First Nation. A fire crew, RCMP and emergency services attended the scene and searched for a male cyclist at Prongua Hill who had been eastbound on Highway 40, the turnoff to Table Mountain. EMS had located the man deep in the side bank of Prongua hill, hearing him while investigating.

Fire chief Larry Gabruch said it was a relief that they were able to find the cyclist, given the location and time of day when the accident occurred.

“He was located deep in the side bank and it was very fortunate that EMS was able to spot him,” Gabruch said. “They actually heard him when they were investigating that area…He was very fortunate to survive that accident. Another 15-20 minutes and it would’ve been completely black outside.”

The man was assessed at the bottom of the hill and then retrieved, where members proceeded to the base of the highway to locate a flat landing zone for STARS Air Ambulance. RCMP blocked traffic in both directions to accommodate the landing.

“Our department used a basket and ropes to retrieve the injured cyclist up onto the highway” Gabruch said.

Following the helicopter’s landing, the cyclist was transported into STARS care and taken to Royal University Hospital. Gabruch said he was transferred into the ICU and had some internal injuries that were dealt with throughout the evening.

“Last we heard he was in stable condition.”

Gabruch said the department dealt with three calls within 24 hours, including a grass fire on Poundmaker 2 south of Battleford, which took place prior to the motorcycle accident at Prongua Hill.

“Then the following morning, we had a rollover not too far from that same location,” he said.

Gabruch praised the work of all members from the fire department, RCMP, EMS and STARS that were involved.

“We collectively work these types of accident scenes and I was very pleased the performance of all agencies,” he said. “Most importantly we were able to find [the driver].”
