Town asks drivers not to park in residential permit parking only area without a permit

The Town of Battleford will now fine drivers who park or stop their vehicles in a residential permit parking only area without a proper parking permit.

Council amended the town’s Playground and School Zone Safety bylaw at its meeting Monday to include this provision about the policy and imposing fines.

Mayor Ames Leslie said the town is receiving an increased amount of complaints on this issue from residents who live along the north side of 25th Street between Second and Third Avenue West near Battleford Central School.

“People are parking in front of their houses, blocking their driveways,” he said. “They are not supposed to be parking on what is the north side of that street.”

Some parents have blocked people’s driveways with their vehicles while they wait to pick up their children from the school.

Previously, there were no penalties in place but the penalty is now $50 for the first offence, $100 for the second offence, and $150 for subsequent offences.

CAO Ash Alam stated in his report that penalties will be enforced after a warning has been issued to the violator.

The town’s public safety officer, Ross MacAngus, stated in his submitted notice to council that the main concern is safety and to ensure children are not running out between parked vehicles.
