Local bull rider, Chance Fennig is headed to Texas for the fall of 2021.

The 17-year-old senior at North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) has signed a letter of intent to join Howard College on a full-ride rodeo scholarship, located in Big Spring, Texas.

Fennig said the opportunity to head down south and continue to pursue his passion for rodeo with a school like Howard College is something he’s very much looking forward to.

“I had seen that a lot of bull riders had come out of there really successfully and made it to the professional ranks coming out of that college, and they’ve given me a really good opportunity to go down there and pursue my career, and continue to do what I like to do,” he said.

Fennig, who comes from a family of bull riders, said they too are excited for what lies ahead in the coming fall and beyond, with his scholarship serving as a significant milestone.

“My family is super excited,” he said. “I’m the first one in my family to go down to the States to ride, so it’s pretty exciting for them and for me too, that I get to go down there and continue to do what I do.”

Fennig’s journey began early, riding his first sheep at age five, and first calf at eight. By 14, he had entered his first steer riding competition and stayed with it for the year before advancing to ride his first bull at 15.

Fennig said as he looks forward to the opportunity ahead. He’s also grateful for all the support from his family, friends and the community that have helped him get to this point.

“I just want to thank everyone from the community that’s supported the rodeos and come and watched them and me,” he said. “Hopefully, I get to ride here again soon.”
