Battlefords disc golf to feature women’s league this season

Spring is here and as the weather continues to warm, disc golf season is on the horizon.

Executive director with the Battlefords Disc Golf Club, Kennedy Schmidt said some in the community are already out and about enjoying the game, even though the official season will not start until the beginning of May.

Schmidt said it’s been great to see the way the game has continued to grow in the community, especially over the last couple of years.

“It definitely is starting to grow, and especially with what youth programs we’ve been able to hold at the fieldhouse over the winter, as they were a huge hit,” she said.

With the men’s league going strong and more and more youth getting involved, the club will now be shifting their focus on the women’s side of the game, with a new women’s league set to debut in the community this season.

To help promote the women’s game and encourage new people to try disc golf, the women’s league will be free to take part in this year. Once established, the club then hopes to be able to host a men’s, women’s, and youth league next spring, and moving forward.

Schmidt said this is the perfect year for people to try their hand at the sport, as disc golf is an outdoor activity and allows for adequate social distancing, even during gameplay.

“If you have two or three discs, that’s enough to play and you can easily see and keep your distance from everyone,” she said. “You don’t have to touch anything other than your own disc.”

Schmidt added that they are grateful to be able to continue to operate amidst the pandemic, and offer their women’s league for free, thanks to the community’s support through fundraisers and sponsorship.

“In July, we did an online auction and we had I think over 50 different businesses that donated items to us, in order to raise the money to help get our youth and women’s league initiatives started and get more people involved,” she said. “So it’s really meant a lot to us, and the support has been great.”
