NW Saskatchewan kitty has good showing in ‘America’s Favorite Pet’ competition

A popular Northwestern Saskatchewan furball has made a bit of a name for himself in the international online competition americasfavpet.com.

The black tabby called Mr. Molly of the Battlefords placed fifth in his category in the quarter-finals after nudging up towards the top in the contest that runs until March 25. Unfortunately, he didn’t snag a spot in the semi-finals.

The top cat and dog winners of the “America’s Favorite Pet” competition will each receive a $5,000 cash prize, and will be featured in Catster or Dogster Magazine respectively.

People can vote once a day for free for any cat or dog they fancy in the running. They also have the option to purchase additional votes if they wish. A portion of the proceeds from the competition benefits U.S.-based non-profit PAWS Foundation that helps cats, dogs, and wildlife.

Mr. Molly’s owner, Michelle Dubyk, said she was surprised her easy going cat fared so well, although he didn’t manage to leap to the top of the heap in the contest.

“I feel good. He did amazing actually,” she said, adding that Mr. Molly garnered quite a few votes, which helped him move up the ranks in the challenge. “You’d be surprised how many people fell in love with him.”

Dubyk is aware of some other Canuck cats that were also in the competition.

So she thought her three-year-old rescue, discovered in the North Battleford Village mobile home community over a year ago, had a good chance. Dubyk is just glad Mr. Molly was able to take part, even if he didn’t take home the winnings.

Mr. Molly also has a fun online presence.

Dubyk was inspired to create an animated Facebook Page for her kitty after seeing how much success Montreal pooch, Pluto, achieved with her Facebook page, Pluto Living, that has over 300,000 followers.

Mr. Molly is now featured in regular talking videos with a dash of humour on his Facebook page called Mr. Molly for the Felines. Dubyk is encouraging people to give her kitty some follows.
