North Battleford’s Ashlyn Elmer and Battleford’s Huisu Kim have been named recipients of the annual Doug Alexander Scholarship Program, through Access Communications.

Elmer, a recent graduate of North Battleford Comprehensive High School and Kim, a graduate of John Paul II Collegiate, represent two of the 20 scholarships of $1,000 awarded to high school graduates from various communities across the province.

Communications Manager at Access, Fran Moran said the program is designed to recognize students who demonstrate a genuine passion for volunteerism, giving their time to improve their communities, in addition to exhibiting academic excellence.

“Our scholarship program recognizes students who actively make their communities better places to live,” Moran said. “Many of last year’s recipients began their post-secondary education virtually, adding uncertainty to an already stressful time [but] by lessening their financial burden, our program supports these future leaders and their pursuit of higher education.”

Elmer said receiving the scholarship means a lot, as she is currently enrolled in her second term as an engineering student at the University Of Saskatchewan.

“The generosity of the scholarship will help contribute to my future endeavors in my career path and the education I need to get there, but more than that, it shows me that people believe in myself and my future,” Elmer said. “That assurance helps me feel motivated and that really I can do this.”

Established in 2005, the Access Communications Doug Alexander Scholarship Program has awarded more than $360,000 to over 1,300 students since its inception.
