North Stars highlight hockey at grassroots level

The Battlefords North Stars and Tim Hortons have partnered together to shine a light on youth hockey in the community.

Together they have invited hockey parents and families to submit a photo of their U7/Timbits hockey players for their new ‘Show us your Hockey Card’ initiative.

To enter, parents can post a picture of their child wearing their team jersey on the outdoor rink or at practice, then tag the North Stars and Tim Hortons on their social media post. The submission deadline to enter is Friday at noon.

Winners have been announced every day this week, with prizes including North Stars and Tim Hortons’ merchandise. Grand prize winners will also receive a Tim Hortons gift card and have their picture made into a 10-pack of real hockey cards, they can then give out to grandparents, teachers and friends.

Marketing manager with the North Stars, Jennifer Whyte said the contest is just another way the team is looking to connect with fans, as the hockey season remains on hold for the time being.

“We’re not able to do all the fun stuff and interact with our little fans this year and that’s a really key part of who we are as a club,” Whyte said. “This is just kind of our creative way to show our appreciation for the little ‘future Stars,’ who are persevering and staying strong during this strange hockey season.”

Each year Tim Hortons sponsors the North Stars’ Timbits initiative, for local minor hockey players of the U7 age group.

Whyte said together they hope this contest can offer a chance for the local hockey community to come together – even if physically apart.

“We felt like maybe through this we can make kids feel important by kind of highlighting them to our social media followers,” she said. “We just thought why not use social media, in these times were you can’t really be face-to-face as much, and connect in some way, even if we can’t have games.”
