There was a good crowd filling up 101st St. Friday, as the fifth annual North Battleford International Street Performer Festival kicked off.

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater and Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie joined Battlefords MLA Herb Cox and a local Elder as part of the opening ceremonies. Cox said the event is a boost for both North Battleford and Battleford.

“Any time we can have a festival such as this, and just seeing the people around here, it’s good for both communities,” he said. “It’s good for all of the northwest of the province to have an opportunity to see some of these world-class performers right here in our city.”

Mayor Bater agreed the event is a big tourist draw.

“This is a highlight of the entire year,” Bater said. “I’m very excited. A lot of people look forward to this during those cold winter days, being able to come in the hot summer sun and enjoy the arts, great food, and a sense of community down here in downtown North Battleford.”

The mayor commended the committee working on the street festival project, adding they started planning for this year’s event shortly after last year’s festival wrapped up.

“They deserve a round of applause for all that hard work,” added Bater.

The event was organized with help from Co-chairs Kali Weber and Janaye Chubb.

“I’m so excited that it’s here. We can see and realize all the work that we’ve put in,” said Chubb, noting more than 30 volunteers also helped in preparing for the event.

“We’re very happy with how things are going, considering we started Friday,” Chubb added. “It allows more people who are working downtown to come during their lunch break or when they are done work. I think this is going to go over really well.”

The festival will run July 27 and 28 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The location of the festival will be between 11th and 12th Ave. on 101st St.
