Onion Lake RCMP make arrest with help from police dog

Jul 26, 2018 | 10:00 AM

An alleged fugitive was tracked down and arrested in the Onion Lake area Monday, with help from an RCMP police dog.

RCMP responded to a complaint of a suspicious man approaching vehicles on a grid road outside Onion Lake in the afternoon of July 23. When police arrived they found a man near a truck, which they confirmed had been reported as stolen. When officers approached the suspect, RCMP said the man fled into the bush.

A few hours later, police apprehended the man with help from Police Dog Services and officers from the Turtleford detachment. RCMP identified the suspect as 20-year-old Michael Hill, who was reported as unlawfully at large from a low-security provincial corrections work camp. When he was apprehended, RCMP said Hill sustained minor injuries from a police dog bite and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Hill was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and driving while prohibited. He remains in custody, RCMP said, and will appear in Onion Lake Provincial Court Aug. 1.
