PBR Classic a huge hit at Civic Centre

Buckin’, beers, and bruises were on offer during the Professional Bull Riding Classic at the Civic Centre.

The PBR Classic ran for its fifth consecutive year in North Battleford last night, which packed the rink with people not only from the Battlefords, but from around the surrounding communities as well. There were a handful of locals competing in the event, which created a ton of local curiosity.

PBR fan Coleman Watt told battlefordsNOW it was an exciting show, and he loved the fast pace.

“They’ve got the bull riders on and out of the chute pretty fast,” he said. “Most bull ridings are drug out and take too long, so this one, they’re on top of things and getting guys out of the chute.”

Jenn Mawson, another PBR fan, said she liked seeing people attending from all across the region.

“It gets a lot of people into the community from the surrounding rural areas,” she said. “It also brings not just spectators, but also competitors into the community. We have Canadian champions coming here, which puts on a great show for us.”

Mawson also told battlefordsNOW her favourite part of the competition was seeing the top-ranked riders.

“It’s exciting,” she said. “There are good bulls and great riders out here competing.”

When the night came to a close, a local bull rider took home the championship. Cody Coverchuk ran well all through the night, leading into the finals. He was the lone rider in the finals to stay on his bull, winning with a score of 87.

All the proceeds for the event went to the Battlefords Trade and Education Centre and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
