Battlefords Minor Baseball looking for volunteers for provincial tournament

Jul 23, 2018 | 2:00 PM

With the Midget Baseball Provincials coming up this weekend, Battlefords Minor Baseball is looking for volunteers.

The provincials will be held from July 27 to 29 in North Battleford, and with the tournament comes opportunity for the community to get out and support the program in a variety of different ways. Darcy Woolfit, parent volunteer, told battlefordsNOW the association is seeking volunteers for several positions.

“Anybody who’s interesting in helping out with maintaining fields, getting them lined off,” he said. “Helping out with concession and helping keeping score and keeping track of pitch count and things of that nature. If there are people out there that are interested, just contact us.”

Woolfit hopes that the community comes together to support the team, and he said he knows that without the community involvement, there wouldn’t be a minor baseball association.

“It’s always good to have community support out there,” he said. “I’m sure there are people out there that have grown up through the minor baseball association here in the Battlefords. If they’d like the opportunity to come out, give back and watch some baseball that would be great.”

The tournament kicks off on Friday at 2 p.m. with the Humboldt Dodgers taking on the Oxbow Orioles. The North Battleford Beavers start their weekend at 5 p.m. at Beaver Lions Stadium against the Saskatoon Bandit Braves later on that evening. The eight team tournament will finish off on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Beaver Lions Stadium with the Gold Medal game. Woolfit says it is a great opportunity for people to get out and watch some quality baseball.

“We’re looking for as much community service as we can get,” he said. “If people are interested in coming out to watch the young boys from the community play some high level baseball, it’s a great opportunity.”
