Local accepts head coaching job with Fort Knox

A North Battleford product is heading down south to be behind the bench.

Ryleigh Campbell was hired over the weekend to become the new Head Coach of the Prairie Junior Hockey League’s Fort Knox. The former North Star assistant coach will be taking the reins of the Junior B hockey club.

Campbell told battlefordsNOW he is extremely excited to be back behind the bench. He said the greatest benefit to the job is being closer to family.

“Just being back in Saskatchewan, being closer to my kid, she’s been my number one fan and my biggest supporter,” he said. “When I asked her if she wanted daddy to start coaching again she started singing Oh Canada. She lives for Oh Canada and We Will Rock You. You can tell she’s been raised around the rink; it’s great to be closer to home.”

Campbell played in the North Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in 2001 with the Warman Valley Crusaders, tallying 61 points and 396 penalty minutes, being named the Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-Star. In 2002 they went on to win the NSJHL Championship.

Campbell went on to play with the Melfort Mustangs in the SJHL, and split his final year of Junior Hockey between the AJHL’s Camorse Kodiaks and the North Eastern Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Killam Wheat Kings.

In 2011, he was an assistant coach with the North Stars under head coach and GM Kevin Hasselburg, and following that, he accepted a position in Lloydminster as an assistant coach with the Bandits. He knows what he will be bringing to the table with the Knox.

“Leadership, learning from Kevin Hasselburg and Blair Atcheynum in the past,” he said. “Kevin is hands down one of the best head coaches in junior hockey. He goes above and beyond and I hope I can bring some of his knowledge to the table and hopefully get these guys to their first championship ever.”

After the year it’s been in junior hockey, with the Broncos bus crash, Campbell knows what a large focus is going to be moving into the season with these junior hockey players.

“Have some fun, playing junior hockey is one of the best experiences of your life,” he said. “We all know what can happen in a flash bang, what happened with Humboldt. You just got to have fun and work your boots off.”

Jarrod Williams, the General Manager for the Knox, announced the hiring in a statement yesterday:

“We look forward to the 2018-19 season and working with Ryleigh and the rest of our coaching staff,” he said.
