New restaurant proposed for North Battleford moving ahead

A new dining venue is coming to North Battleford.

City council approved a discretionary land use application at its meeting this week for the new Black Pepper Restaurant, at the north end of 100 Street.

Mayor David Gillan said it will be good to have the site that has been empty for years in use once again.

“Obviously that place has been vacant since 2008,” he said. “We wanted to put it back into production as a restaurant; it makes sense as a restaurant.”

The city received two letters from area residents with concerns about the potential for noise and pedestrian traffic from the proposed establishment, particularly because it will also have a lounge area.

As a result, council included a provision the venue must have a fence installed around the south-west back-corner of the site by June 30, 2021.

This would also prevent access to and from the back alley behind the venue.

Coun. Len Taylor said having the fencing might also alleviate patrons’ as well as residents’ concerns about safety related to the proximity to the alley.

City Planner Ryan Mackrell said the owner is willing to work with the city to address any issues related to the property.

The venue’s lounge will be located at one end of the establishment. Council wants to ensure this part of the site remains a smaller section in the business, to limit noise since the back end of the property abuts with a residential area.

Mackrell said the venue is expected to be similar to some other area restaurants that operate with a smaller quiet lounge area attached.
