City and town swearing-in ceremonies to be streamed online

Nov 16, 2020 | 2:01 PM

Tonight will be an exciting time for the City of North Battleford and the Town of Battleford as the members of the new councils are officially sworn in.

The public will be able to see all the festivities online via the City of North Battleford and the Town of Battleford website links.

North Battleford city clerk Debbie Wohlberg said it’s unfortunate members of the public are not able to attend in person, due to the province’s COVID-19 capacity limitations for gathering. But at least they have the option to view it virtually.

“You may see a lot of people in masks today because of the new restrictions,” she added.

Participants will follow social-distancing protocols and other precautions under the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s guidelines.

“It is going to be a little different,” Wohlberg said.

The inaugural meetings of the newly elected councils for the city and town will both start at 6 p.m.

As part of the process, the councillors and mayors will take their oath of office and sign their declarations. Then, they will be official members of council.

The city is holding its ceremony at the Dekker Centre for council and a few invited guests only.

Wohlberg said the whole ceremony is “a big deal” for council members who have never been sworn in before.

The Town of Battleford will have its ceremony for the new council at the Town Hall. The public will be able to watch the proceedings at home online.
