Village of Meota council candidates all acclaimed

The Village of Meota will not have an election this fall as all the candidates for the council positions won their seat by acclamation.

Dave Konopelski is acclaimed as mayor, while Pat Becotte, Betty Johnson, Teresa Ducharme and Carole Chapman were acclaimed for the four councillor positions.

Konopelski will start his first full term on council. He was first elected as mayor after winning against candidate Charlene Esquirol in a byelection in May. Chapman will begin her first full term after capturing a vacant councillor seat in a May byelection, winning by a difference of one vote in a race with Pat Becotte. Becotte was later able to claim a seat for the fall election without any contenders.

Konopelski said he is pleased to get back to business as the new mayor.

“I’m certainly looking forward to a new first term,” Konopelski said. “Meota is a fantastic little community. There are some new developments coming here. We have an opportunity for some real growth in the next three or four years that we can see right now.”

He mentioned some of the work council has been involved in includes updating some old bylaws to help open up more opportunities for development. Otherwise, Konopelski said there does not appear to be any notable hurdles for the team.

“Everything runs pretty smoothly here,” he said. “I don’t see anything on the horizon that would pose any kind of a challenge.”

For Becotte, who has lived in Meota for 21 years, he is thrilled to take his seat as a new councillor. He said he wanted to be on council so he could have a voice in decision-making.

“I’m here for the betterment of our community,” he said.
