Festival of Trees to celebrate 25th anniversary

Oct 29, 2020 | 6:00 PM

The Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation’s Festival of Trees fundraiser will enter it’s 25th year this November.

The annual event has become a staple of the holiday season in the community, and will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 4.

The theme of 2020’s celebration is “Merry & Bright” and will provide a tour of The Battlefords and all things Christmas.

Rather than being held at one singular location this year, the beautifully decorated trees, wreathes and accent pieces will be on display and for sale throughout The Battlefords, at various businesses and sponsor locations.

Claudette McGuire is executive director with the BUH Foundation. She said the change will provide an opportunity for all to safely view and bid on items, while also adhering to building capacity limits, and supporting their local businesses, which is key.

“I think it’s important, as always, to support local business,” McGuire said. “Local business supports us, and by putting these decorated items in different businesses, it brings people through their doors. We can’t do [events like this] without donors, and we can’t do it without business’ support and individuals’ support.”

Funds raised at this year’s Festival of Trees, will support the BUH Foundation’s new capital campaign, “Diagnostic Detectives: Solving your Health Mysteries.” The campaign will raise funds for new equipment and technology for the lab at the BUH.

McGuire said while the event still sits a couple of weeks away, the staff and organizers at the BUH Foundation are already looking forward to it, and encourage residents to bring in the season, while supporting a good cause.

“[We invite people to] come out and support us and help out our lab,” she said. “It is Christmas and is a good way to kind of usher in the season.”

Social distancing and mask-wearing will be strongly encouraged at all times this year, for those planning to attend the festivities.

Family Day activities are being planned to be held in a virtual format, within households. However, the formal evening of Festival of Trees and the Christmas high tea will not be held this year.
