Battlefords experiencing slick road conditions

Tuesday morning before 10 a.m. there was a collision near the corner of 100^th Street and 16^th Avenue due to slick road conditions, the RCMP has confirmed.

No one was injured in the crash, that involved a black car hitting a pole outside a local restaurant.

The incident was one of four calls the local RCMP detachment received, in relation to minor collisions due to slippery road conditions. None involved serious injury.

Battlefords RCMP Staff Sgt. Jason Teniuk, said the slippery conditions make it as important as ever to remember to properly prepare for the winter season, and drive with caution and awareness.

“I’d certainly like to recommend to the public that now is the time to get your winter tires ready, or installed if you can do that,” he said. “It’s also important to just really drive appropriately through winter road conditions. It’s been a while since we’ve had conditions like this, and we certainly want to see everyone getting to where they’re going in a safe manor and at an appropriate speed.”

Teniuk said while icy roads may mean leaving the house a little earlier to get to work on time in the morning. Those minor tweaks to plans help to ensure the roads remain safe, as it can be dangerous to push the speed limit while conditions are slick.

“The road speed [limits] are based on perfect road conditions, so at this time, particularly given the bad road conditions, it’s not abnormal to be driving at a lower speed just to allow that extra time to stop,” he said. “We’re just hoping everyone gets back into winter mode, slows down a bit and takes that little bit of extra time to ensure they get to where they’re going safely.”
