Blais commits to U of R Cougars for 2021-22 season

Turtleford’s Jordyn Blais has been on the ice for nearly as long as she can remember.

Starting out in figure skating at the age of four, it took no more than a season for her to discover her true passion also included a stick and a puck.

The rest as they say, is history. From that point forward, hockey has been a passion of the now 17-year-old. Which is why it should come as no surprise to hear the AAA Sharks’ standout has committed to the University of Regina Cougars for the 2021-22 season.

For Blais, the opportunity to continue her hockey career at the post-secondary level with a program like Regina’s, is nothing short of a dream come true.

“The U of R was my first choice of where I wanted to go,” she said with an audible smile. “I looked a lot into their program and their head coach, Sarah [Hodges], has been there for so long and she is really committed to the program. I have also heard a lot about the university having a kind of small, hometown feel to it, and with me being from such a small town I felt like that would make a good fit for me too.”

For Blais, who will be heading into her third year as a member of the AAA Sharks this fall, it’s been a bit of a unique hockey journey, to get to where she is today.

Due to a shortage of female players in the community growing up, Blais played boys hockey for much of her grassroots playing days, until her first year Bantam. However, as she got older she would also see some opportunity to play on carded girls teams at the end of the year, helping her team to two provincial championships she will not soon forget.

Blais said perhaps her most memorable hockey moments to this point include making the U-16 Team Saskatchewan her Grade 10 year, and U-18 team this year, before nationals were ultimately cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

More than just accomplishments though, Blais said what keeps her coming back to hockey is her pure love of the game, and relationships she has built through her time playing.

“Hockey is something I am very passionate about,” Blais said. “It’s been a huge part of my life and the friends and memories I’ve made along the way I will hang onto forever. I can’t explain the feeling I get on the ice, but all I know is I love the sport and want to keep playing for as long as I can.”
