BASAC Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser event raises about $7,000

Sep 18, 2020 | 2:36 PM

The funds raised from this year’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event for the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre (BASAC) were beyond many people’s expectation.

“A rough estimate right now puts us at around $7,000 with some money still coming in,” BASAC executive director Amber Stewart said. “This would be around $3,000 more than last year.”

Stewart said the fourth annual event also saw more participants than prior years, with a total of 27 supporters taking part.

“We are so blessed in our community — the donations, the sponsorships, the walkers — to be increased when we’re in a global pandemic,” she said. “We are just so thankful.”

Battlefords community leaders are among many who showed their strong support for an important local cause.

Mayors Ryan Bater and Ames Leslie joined many other participants who squeezed their feet into red high-heeled pumps to strut, shimmy or limp along the main street for the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser Thursday evening.

The Battlefords North Stars head coach Brayden Klimosko also took part.

Just under 30 participants joined in the walk, an international event aimed to increase awareness and help stop gender violence.

Many wore masks for the event as a COVID-19 precaution.

Stewart thanked long-time supporter Kurt Briant as well as Scott Campbell Dodge’s team who have participated every year since the beginning of the event.

Battlefords RCMP Staff Sergeant Jason Teniuk joined two other officers as part of the detachment’s team for the walk.

The RCMP were represented last year as well.

Teniuk said it’s imperative for police to be involved in these types of initiatives.

“The RCMP at the Battlefords detachment has always been very focused on community-based policing, and supporting organizations and causes exactly like this,” he said. “So we’re going to continue to do that moving forward.”
