North Stars Breakfast Club in full swing in the Battlefords

It is said, early bird gets the puck… or something like that.

Either way, there’s nothing like a little bit of hockey to start the morning right.

The North Stars Breakfast Club kicked off this week at the Civic Centre, giving young community hockey players a chance to hit the ice and work on their game for an hour each morning.

This marks the first year of the Stars’ Breakfast Club, which began Monday (Sept. 14) and will run until Thursday (Sept. 17) from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Marketing Manager with the North Stars, Jennifer Whyte, said the event came about as another way to try to connect with the youth in the community. She said especially as we now hit the time of year the team would usually be taking to the ice, it becomes all the more important to still provide a strong community presence.

“Normally our season would be starting now, and the boys would be out in the community tapping on shoulders and getting their younger fans from the schools to come and cheer them on,” she said. “So we’re just still trying to find ways to engage the youth and keep them busy. We still want to give them that opportunity to kind of interact with our team.”

The North Stars, along with the rest of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, are still awaiting official confirmation from the Saskatchewan Health Authority on when the junior season can go ahead.

For the time being, the tentative start date remains Oct. 9, but that date is subject to change.

Last month it was confirmed the Western Hockey League season will begin no sooner than Dec. 4.
