The Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan (MCoS) has partnered with a number of local organizations, to host a free community walk in the Battlefords this weekend, to celebrate local diversity.

Known as Walk2gether Stand2gether, the event will take place Saturday, Sept. 19 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is designed to help bring residents together in celebration of various cultures, to bond in community and help combat racism.

Executive Director with the MCoS, Rhonda Rosenberg said the event provides residents with a chance to have some fun together in community, while also learning something new in the process.

“This is an opportunity for people to come out and be outside, be in the community, and learn about some different cultures,” she said. “They can learn a bit about what racism is and what we can do about it; and sometimes simply by coming together, sharing space and building relationships and trust, we can start to break down some of those walls.”

The route will begin at Living Faith Chapel with an opening ceremony kickoff. Participants will then be split into walking groups of 15 people, who will depart in either direction on the route.

The walk will travel from Living Faith Chapel to the Lighthouse, back up to the Allen Sapp Gallery, and then to downtown via 11th Avenue to 101st Street. It will then carry on back to Central/Library Park and return to the church.

There will be various activities along the route to participate in, such as chalk drawing, button making, and a round dance activity, along with demonstrations to watch. People will also be sharing personal stories, and there will be a drum group, and other musical entertainment.

All activities planned are short, as each walking group will have 15 minutes at each stop, before then moving along the route.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, common safety precautions for public gatherings over the last number of months will remain in place. Participants will be asked to adhere to physical distancing guidelines, with both mask wearing and regular hand sanitizing being recommended.
