Sep 1, 2020 | 12:39 PM

A suspect facing charges connected to the Tiki Laverdiere homicide had his case adjourned when he appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court Tuesday.

Samuel Takakenew, 36, is charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

When Takakenew appeared in court, he was asked if he understood the charge read to him. He replied “not really.”

While in custody, he plans to apply for a lawyer through the North Battleford Legal Aid office.

The accused must abide by a no contact order for a list of individuals that is protected by a publication ban in place.

Takakenew will return to court Sept. 18 at 11 a.m.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford May 1, 2019. Her remains were found in a rural area outside North Battleford on July 11, 2019 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman July 16, 2019.

The accused’s mother Mavis Quinn Takakenew was in the courtroom gallery during her son’s appearance.

In February Mavis Takakenew pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in the case. She was sentenced May 15 to an 18-month jail sentence. At that time she had four months and eight days left in custody, after credit for time served.

Ten people have been charged in the Laverdiere case in total. From that number, two have entered guilty pleas before sentencing. The remaining eight are before the courts.
