Resort Village elections planned for this Saturday

Aug 28, 2020 | 9:00 AM

Area resort villages are planning to hold their municipal elections this Saturday.

For the Resort Village of Aquadeo, a total of seven individuals are each seeking one of the four available councillor seats.

Tolander Baker, Carla Budnick, Jerome Bru, Zane Delainey, Larry Foster (incumbent), Jim McCaughey and Brenda Wouters are vying for the seats. Incumbent candidate Peter Delainey has already been acclaimed as mayor.

To qualify for the ballot, candidates must own property in the Resort Village of Aquadeo.

Voting will take place at the community hall, and follow the province’s COVID-19 precautions. Voters will enter one door at a side entrance and exit through the other side.

“We are going to be practising social distancing, [being] six feet apart,” Returning officer Brian de Montbrun said.

The Resort Village of Metinota does not need to hold an election this year as its two councillor positions have been acclaimed by incumbents Dean Menssa and Marcel Bernier. The village’s Mayor Tim Lafreniere did not seek re-election leading Larry Doke to be acclaimed for the position, which he begins on Aug. 30.

Doke, who resides in Metinota, sought election after some residents asked him if he would be interested in serving.

“I was a councillor here for 16 years, so it’s fine,” he said. “I have time to do it now so I am looking forward to it.”

Doke is currently the outgoing MLA for Cut Knife-Turtleford. He will also continue in his position as MLA until the day before the provincial election, which is expected to take place Oct. 26. He has served as the MLA for nine years.

For the Resort Village of Cochin, five individuals are seeking one of the four councillor seats available.

Running are Ken Hartman, as well as incumbents Marcel Caplette, David Stillar, Peter Wiesner and Ricky Young. Incumbent Harvey Walker has been acclaimed for the position of mayor.

The election will take place at the Cochin community hall, located off Highway 4.

The Resort Village of Cochin will also have COVID-19 precautions in place for election day.
