U16 Bandits making the most of unique summer ball season

Aug 8, 2020 | 1:00 PM

The softball season may have been abbreviated this summer, but the U16 Battlefords Bandits are making the most of their time together on the field.

To this point, the team has played just a pair of games against their neighbours from Unity, with just a single game remaining on the schedule for the month-long season.

However, as head coach of the team, Regan Lavallee said, the girls are just happy to be back outside with their friends this summer, playing the game they love.

“The girls that are there are just happy to be back out on the field and playing some kind of sport,” Lavallee said. “Most of the girls on the team are quite heavily involved with a number of sports, so when that was all taken away in March, I think they were just happy to get out on the field and get some practices, throw the ball around and be in some kind of sport environment.”

Lavallee said while there may not have been much for games available this season, as many communities have just cancelled their seasons outright due to the pandemic-induced delay to the season, the time spent on the field having fun and practicing this summer can only bode well for the local girls’ softball program in the community moving forward.

“It will definitely help the girls keep up their skills and hopefully next season looks a little bit different and is back to some kind of a normal season,” she said. “Usually it starts about mid-April, so it’s just good for them to keep up their skills this year, looking ahead to next year.”

The U16’s will play the U14 Bandits Wed., Aug. 12 at The Flats #2 to close out their season.
