Colby Friedrich finishes junior golf career on a high note

Local golfer Colby Friedrich wrapped up his junior golfing career with a sixth place finish at the Saskatchewan Junior Boys Championship this week in Swift Current.

Friedrich got out to a great start that had him leading the field after posting a two-under 70 on his first round Tuesday. Unfortunately he couldn’t maintain that momentum and fell back from the top spot with an eight-over 80 on Wednesday and a six-over 78 on Thursday.

Friedrich said it was frustrating to golf as well as he did on the first day in 60 kilometer winds and then falter the next two days.

“After the first day I was [satisfied] golfing in 60 kilometer winds but when the weather was as good as it was the last two days I’m not overly happy with how I scored,” he said. “I didn’t play too bad, I just wasn’t able to score.”

Friedrich said he was finding success off the tee box and on the greens but was struggling making shots with his mid-range irons.

“I would definitely say that my irons coming into greens wasn’t the best. I really struggled on the par threes and that really hurt my chances,” he said.

Although bittersweet, Friedrich said he was happy to see his friend and golfing partner, Josh Nagy, win the tournament.

“Josh played unbelievable the last two days. I played with him every day and he is one of my closest buddies out here on the junior tour so credit to him playing really well,” he said.

Although Friedrich finished three spots off the podium, he said he was happy to see the improvement in his game from the year before.

“Last year I didn’t play well at all. I think I was outside the top 10, maybe even outside the top 15,” he said.

This was the last junior event in Saskatchewan that Friedrich will play in, now joining the amateur men’s rankings, and he said he was happy to finish on a high note.

“That was the last junior round of my career. Overall, I think I ended on a decently positive note with a top 10 finish,” he said.

Friedrich plans to attend his second year at Edward’s School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan in the fall.
