Friedrich nears top of leaderboard following second day of Sask. tournament

It should be a down-to-the-wire finish at the 94^th Sask. Junior Boy’s Championship this week.

Held in conjunction with the junior girl’s championship, July 14 to 16 at the Elmwood Golf and Country Club in Swift Current, the three-day provincial event wrapped up its second day of action Wednesday.

If one thing remains remains clear through the first two rounds, it is still anyone’s game heading into the final day of action, Thursday.

Local Battlefords golfer, Colby Friedrich ranked atop the event at the end of the opening day, Tuesday with a five-shot lead after posting a two-under-par, 70. Perhaps even more impressive, Friedrich was able to excel despite reported wind gusts of up to 50 kilometres an hour and periodic rain during the first of three rounds in the championship.

However, the field sat not far behind at the end of the opening round, closing the gap further in round two, as Friedrich fell to eight-over-par in the second round, and six-over-par, overall.

At the end of play Wednesday, Saskatoon’s Josh Nagy, who finished the first round five back of the lead, now fronts the pack at two-over-par on the tournament.

Meanwhile, Estevan’s Jayden Dudas ranks second at five-over-par, while Friedrich, still very much at the top of the heap, now sits tied for third with Saskatoon’s Alex Swinnerton at six-over-par.

Altogether, 43 players are competing at this year’s junior boy’s provincial event. Tee off on the third and final round, Thursday, will begin at 8 a.m.
