Despite Friday’s rain out, the 2018 chuckwagon races in North Battleford went off without a hitch again this year.

The Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association event was expected to take place Friday to Sunday but ended up running Saturday and Sunday only.

“Over the two days, the Saturday and Sunday, we did get what we usually get. However, saying that, we did lose the Friday because of the weather,” said Jocelyn Ritchie, general manager of Battlefords Agricultural Society, the organizer of the event.

“Over the two days we had just under 2,000 people in attendance,” she added. Ritchie estimates the event lost about 1,000 in attendance because of the rain out on Friday.

About 36 wagons participated in the races, coming from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta.

“All the volunteers and staff worked well together overall,” she added. “We have a good team. It went over very smoothly.”

Results

In the aggregate results, Robby Ethier snagged first place, Jamie Laboucane came in second, and Chance Bensmiller placed third.

Darren Mitsuing, of the Loon Lake area, near Meadow Lake, participated in the races with his father Ray. Brother Dale also took part. Darren said he was happy with the results, and to see Ray’s team come in within the top 10.

Mitsuing said he’s been involved with the sport since 1993.

“I just like meeting new people and and the camaraderie,” he said. “We are all trying to race against each other but in a way we’re all friends. It’s a big famiy affair.”

Next stop for the circuit is Bonnyville, Alta.
