Local golfer reacts to announcement of provincial championships

It‘s been a noteworthy couple of days for amateur golfers in the province.

Golf Saskatchewan announced it will host eight provincial championships this year, taking precautions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The first tournament of the season will be the 102^nd Saskatchewan Women’s Amateur Championship, which will run from July 9 to 11 at Saskatoon’s Willows Golf and Country Club.

From there, the 94^th Junior Boys and 70^th Junior Girls’ Championships will follow, held in conjunction at the Elmwood Golf Club in Swift Current from July 14 to 16.

The 109^th Men’s Amateur and 34^th Mid-Amateur championships are scheduled for July 21-24 at Warman’s Legends Golf Club.

The schedule will then conclude with a final stop at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert, July 28 to 30. There the 101^st Senior Men’s Championship and Mid-Masters Championship will take place, along with the 57^th Senior Women’s Championship.

Local golfer, Colby Friedrich will be playing in the Men’s Junior Provincials in Swift Current. He said receiving the news there would be a tournament this season after all, came as a bit of a pleasant surprise; especially as this is his final year of junior eligibility.

“I was obviously wholly optimistic they would have a tournament, but I was a bit surprised it was going to be in the middle of July as I thought they may have to hold it later,” he said. “I’m just excited and thankful that Saskatchewan’s able to host the tournament this year, with this being my last junior year. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Friedrich said he’ll be aiming to make the most of the opportunity ahead and looks forward to the comaraderie of the competition.

“I’m just hoping to have a good tournament, and most importantly, I’m just looking forward to seeing all my buddies that I haven’t seen for a year,” he said. “To catch up with them and hopefully battle it out at the end.”
