First part of phase four of Saskatchewan Re-Open plan set for June 22

The first part of phase four of the provincial government’s Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan is set to start on June 22.

Youth day camps, outdoor pools and splash parks, and outdoor sports and activities will be included.

The second part of phase four will include indoor pools, indoor rinks, libraries, museums, galleries, movie theatres, casinos and bingo halls. A date for the second part of phase four has yet to be announced.

Battlefords Chamber of Commerce’s Chief Operating Officer Linda Machniak, said she is happy to see the first part of phase four arrive ahead of schedule.

“I was pleasantly surprised. I was not expecting or had not heard about a new date for any part of phase four so the fact that it was happening already was a bit of a surprise,” she said.

Machniak was hopeful the early arrival of the first part of phase four may mean that the second part of the phase will arrive sooner rather than later.

“Part two of phase four may come sooner than what we had thought,” she said. “The government, I’m sure, will have to provide an opportunity for those businesses to open. Some of those larger ones are not going to turn on a dime, they are going to need to have their protocols in place in time.”

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater said the city will work diligently to make sure facilities are ready to go for the start of the first part of phase four.

“We are preparing as a city to make our facilities available, specifically our splash parks. They will be open on June 22, as will our outdoor recreation facilities, so that is our ball diamonds and soccer fields and so on,” he said.

Bater said he and the rest of the city’s officials have been glad to have a solid plan from the provincial government.

“Having the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan is a benefit because you can anticipate what those steps will be, it is just a question of timing,” he said.

Bater admitted while having the first part of phase four start on June 22 is a positive, most people anticipate the second part of the phase.

“The next big step will be 4.2. That will include major recreation facilities, like indoor ones, casinos and the like. 4.2 will be, in my mind, an even bigger step,” he said.

Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab, said he expects the province to announce the start date for the second part of phase four later this week or next week.
