Fire ban to be lifted in Battlefords Provincial Park by weekend

May 31, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Battlefords Provincial Park officials have plans to lift their fire ban after enjoying a couple rainy days this week, although the ban is still currently in place.

Park Manager Jackie Starling said recent showers have helped improve the ground conditions in the park and reduced the amount of poplar seeds in the air, which are prone to catching fire.

“We haven’t got the formal notice, but we are looking to get it removed before this weekend,” Starling said Thursday.

The park has already put in its request to lift the ban, Starling said, but the request needs official approval before the restrictions can be removed.

The main fire ban for parks in Saskatchewan imposed by the province last week has already been lifted, with the exceptions of Battlefords Provincial Park and Saskatchewan Landing. As a result, campfire restrictions remain in place for those two locations and no open fires are permitted. The Ministry of Parks, Culture, and Sport said any self-contained, CSA-approved portable gas heating devices, barbecues, pressurized stoves and charcoal briquettes are permitted for cooking and heating purposes at the park’s discretion for the duration of the ban.
