Opening of parks and beaches results in boost for local campgrounds

It was a busy weekend for camping in Saskatchewan.

With beaches, parks and play structures opening up on June 12, campgrounds across the province saw a significant increase in campers.

Angie Carver, park manager at The Battlefords Provincial Park, said having beaches, trails, and play structures opening up bolstered the amount of campers they had over the weekend.

“Being able to access playgrounds and beaches was a draw,” she said.

Under the current COVID-19 restrictions, campgrounds can only operate at 50 per cent of normal capacity. Carver said they were glad to see campers returning to the park now more facilities were available to them.

“Luckily we did have quite a few people in our sites, with 50 per cent capacity of sites. They were fairly full and the weather wasn’t the best but it seemed to have quite a few people within the park enjoying both the beaches, the trails, most of the park and the lake,” she said.

The staff at The Battlefords Provincial Park have been working diligently to clean, sanitize and prepare the park for campers and Carver said she was happy to see everybody taking extra steps to remain healthy.

“It is really great to be able to see people out and about and respecting each other and our policies and what we are trying to do here in the park. Our staff are definitely trying to stay ahead of all the cleaning that is involved, but it is nice to see the respect of people and they are enjoying the park and still able to be out and about,” she said.

Carver explained anybody hoping to go camping this summer should book early because with limited capacity and beaches and parks opening up they are filling up fast.

“There are limited sites available and the booking system is showing that there are a few still left, so there are some opportunities, but I’m sure as we get closer to the long weekend they will be filling up fast,” she said.
