North Battleford reinstating fire pit inspections

Since the provincial government is relaxing some COVID-19 requirements, North Battleford firefighters are now able to resume inspection for fire pits

The city had originally announced inspections were being held off as a safety precaution for residents and fire hall staff.

“Ensuring that my members didn’t get exposed to any possibility of [coronavirus transmission] while doing the actual inspection itself,” Fire Chief Lindsay Holm said. “Just trying to limit ourselves to emergency activities only.”

Since the government has begun to ease regulations on social interaction, Holm felt it was time to get moving on inspections.

“We thought it was time to start lifting some of those restrictions as well, as part of our recovery plans,” he said. “It’s allowing people to return to some normalcy.”

Residents can now easily purchase their fire pit permits from the city website and arrangement inspection times with the fire hall.

“Once they get their pit installed according to the regulations, they can book in an inspection time with the fire department and we will come down to inspect it,” Holm said.

Pits being put in must be located almost 10 feet away from a property line, building or other combustible structure. They are also limited to 29.5 inches, ringed with a non-combustible medium or product, which has to be 16 inches in diameter. Some examples include sand.

“Non-combustible medium would mean either clean earth, sand, gravel or something like patio blocks,” Holm said.
