Tribute song honouring Colby Cave released today

A song by Oilers prospect Cooper Marody, titled Agape was released today in honour of his friend and teammate Colby Cave.

Marody wrote and performed the song to memorialize his friend who passed away April 11, 2020. He said the song is a gift to Colby’s late wife Emily Cave.

In a statement to the Edmonton Oilers, Marody said he was proud to be a part of this project and it was the most important song he ever wrote.

“I am also grateful that Emily reached out to me and entrusted such a personal message to me. In so many ways, I felt like Colby was writing and singing through me and my collaborators Kyle and Gavin,” he said.

In a public statement, Colby’s wife Emily thanked Marody for the song and explained the importance of titling the song Agape.

“Agape was a word that Colby and I said to each other because we felt ‘I love you’ never fully described the amount of love we had for each other,” she said. “Agape is the highest form of love. Selfless, sacrificial and unconditional love; it persists no matter the circumstance.”

Mayor Ames Leslie told battlefordsNOW he was moved upon hearing the song about Cave, who grew up in Battleford.

“Music is such an amazing medium for many to deal with grief and display their sorrow,” he said. “You can feel the passion in the words and believe it was a very heart-felt tribute to Colby and [I] appreciate Cooper for sharing it with us all.”

Taylor Cave, Colby’s sister, said it’s a mix of emotions every time she hears the lyrics, particularly a section of audio which includes a recording of her brother’s wedding vows.

“It’s such a beautiful song and it’s so personal and it hits so close to home,” she said. “But at the same time, I’d be lying if I didn’t say it’s hard to listen to.”

She added it’s hard to wrap her head around the legacy her brother left.

“He was always someone that put others before him and always wanted to do more and would never not take that minute to talk to someone,” she said. “Especially little kids, he loved little kids.”

Agape is available for download on all music platforms with all proceeds going to the Colby Cave Memorial Fund. Proceeds from the fund go toward community programs with an emphasis on mental health initiatives and providing access to sports for underprivileged children.
