Young gymnasts show their skills at Fun Meet

May 29, 2018 | 10:00 AM

Local and visiting gymnasts showed off their skills Sunday as the Battlefords Gymnastics Club held its fourth annual Fun Meet.

Head coach Danielle Clark said the meet was a good opportunity for the youths to demonstrate the skills they learned during the past year, and a chance to compete for awards. This year was the first time athletes from clubs in Saskatoon and Waldheim took part in the meet, Clark added.

“It’s really nice for them to be able to come,” she said. “We have never had a gymnastics meet here before that had other athletes from other clubs participating.”

Clark said the club decided to open up the competition in order to give the Battlefords athletes a chance to compete at a higher level against the visiting contenders.

The Battlefords Gymnastics Club also is looking at expanding the meet even further next year to include more clubs, Clark said.

“Hopefully, we’ll have even more athletes come,” Clark said.

About 55 young gymnasts between ages four and 16 participated in the event, competing in the bars, vault, beam and floor routines. Some athletes also performed in rhythmic gymnastics.

In addition to vying for awards, participants received notes and comments from the judges at the end of the meet to get feedback on their strengths and weaknesses.
