Crop report shows Northwestern region ahead of five-year average

The Saskatchewan Crop Report for May 26 to June 1 shows dry conditions last week allowed farmers to nearly complete seeding in all regions of the province.

Provincially, 96 per cent of the crop is now planted, which is ahead of the five-year average of 92 per cent.

In the Northwestern region, seeding is at 95 per cent in the region, up from 75 per cent last week and ahead of the five-year average of 91 per cent (2015-2019) for this time of year. The Northwestern region shows 99 per cent of field peas, 97 per cent of the spring wheat, 96 per cent of the canola, 91 per cent of the barley and 82 per cent of the oats are planted.

Warm temperatures combined with the recent rain have improved the pasture conditions in the region. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 97 per cent adequate and two per cent short. Hay and pasture land topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 94 per cent adequate and five per cent short.

In the report the province said generally speaking, crop development in the province is behind due to cooler temperatures earlier in the season, but should improve with recent weather. Warm temperatures and good moisture conditions are supporting crop growth and crops are germinating and emerging uniformly.

The majority of crops in the region are in good condition and there was minimal crop damage this week, but the damage reported was due to wind and flea beetles.
