Sentencing planned for two facing accessory charge in Laverdiere homicide

May 14, 2020 | 2:00 PM

Two of the eight suspects connected to the Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation are scheduled to be sentenced in Battleford Queen’s Bench Court Friday.

Mavis Takakenew, 55, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in February 2020.

Brent Checkosis,19, pleaded guilty to the same charge in December 2019.

Checkosis is also facing charges of improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle that are still outstanding. He has not entered pleas to these charges.

Checkosis and Takakenew remain in custody.

Separate sentencing hearings were held in Feb. 2020 for both individuals. The decisions on the sentencings were to originally take place March 25 but were adjourned, due to the court’s directives related to COVID-19 precautions.

The public and the media are not permitted to attend the upcoming sentencing decision due to the province’s pandemic precaution measures in place. The court will inform the media of the decisions afterwards.

The court ordered a publication ban on all details of the hearings, including evidence, and victim impact statements until the judge or jury, depending on the matter, involving all the other six accused have retired to consider their verdict.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford on May 1, 2019. Human remains were found in a rural area outside North Battleford on July 11 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16.
