Mayor reminds residents to follow recycling rules

The City of North Battleford is urging residents carefully adhere to recycling guidelines.

Mayor Ryan Bater said several audits have shown people continue to put items in the blue bins that aren’t recyclable. If this trend continues, it will cost the entire city.

“When you have no allowable materials, it will spoil the entire load, Bater said. “And I don’t mean just your cart, I mean the entire block.”

When this occurs, the load ends up in the landfill and fills up cells. When the current cell is completely full, it will costs millions to construct a new one.

Some of the items found in blue bins included compost, diapers and needles. However, Bater said less extreme additions, such as batteries, electronics and even plastic bags are still not allowed.

“Those aren’t supposed to go in the bins anymore; they’re not recyclable,” he said.

The city has started to issue warnings while identifying those who are non-compliant. Bater warns if this trend continues, they will have to take further action.

“It may become an enforcement issue,” he said. “Because we do need people adhere to the directive.”

The top of each bin indicates what items may be recycled. Residents are also advised that if they display any COVID-19 symptoms to bag recyclables and place them in the garbage.

“Human beings handle that on the other end and the virus can exist on hard surfaces,” Bater said. “So, don’t put anything in the recycling if you are showing symptoms.”

Bater also said in addition to extending the life of the landfill cell, it means environmental responsibility.

“This is all being done for a purpose,” he said.

Any residents in doubt of whether their items can be placed in the blue bins can go to the city’s website.
