Battleford planning two construction projects

Apr 21, 2020 | 1:55 PM

Priority streets needing work in Battleford won’t be getting any less attention during the COVID-19 situation.

Two projects that remain in the top of the list for this summer are Second Avenue sidewalk work and 35th Street paving.

“Council had identified that, even during this pandemic we need to continue infrastructure projects as much as we can for the money that was budgeted,” Mayor Ames Leslie said.

CAO John Enns-Wind confirmed construction crews are following COVID-19 precaution measures when on the job, and comply with social distancing by having work stations at least two metres apart.

Enns-Wind noted in his report, the pricing in 2020 has been lower than last year.

The Second Avenue sidewalk work will cover the area between 19th Street to 21st Street, and will be built on one side of the road at an estimated cost of around $90,000.

Leslie said council has been asking for this work to be done for most of its term. He added the project will “add safety to the community.”

The 35th Street road paving project will run from Second Avenue to as far as funding will apply, heading toward 24th Street toward the flats, with $243,000 allocated for the project.

“Anyone who drives down 35th Street will notice that road is getting pretty rough. So we are going to put a small investment to start improving the quality of that road,” Leslie said.

Coun. Shelley Boutin-Gervais mentioned council needs to keep in mind the COVID-19 situation could impact the town’s revenues so wanted to be prudent with spending and stick to the budget.

Both projects are expected to be completed this year. The funds for the work have been budgeted.

“Now that it has been approved to move forward, administration will get tenders out,” Leslie said. “They pretty much have the legwork done. So they are hoping to have the tenders out within the next couple of weeks, and hopefully get some projects started this summer.”
