City’s snow clean-up crews making progress

North Battleford motorists are starting to see the pavement again after the area was walloped with a significant snowstorm over the past few days.

The city’s crews were out all day Monday in the ongoing clean- up response, starting with the main roads.

“We’ve got the snow plows and graders out,” director of operations Stewart Schafer said. “We’re doing priority streets as normal.”

Crews planned to finish work on 100 St. and 11 Ave. Tuesday and focus on 101 St. and 12 Ave. Wednesday and more of the downtown area.

Workers will then undertake the task of clearing the side streets after that.

Schafer asked people to keep their vehicles back from the city’s sanders so crews can continue with their work.

Slightly milder temperatures in the plus digits ahead are also helping melt the snow buildup.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang said residents can expect to see the potential for another big snowfall anytime until the end of April.

She estimated about eight centimetres of snow fell Monday. For the month so far the area saw 8.1 millimetres of precipitation.

“We always know April can bring snowstorms,” Lang said. “Our spring and fall usually bring us our heaviest snowstorms, just because we are tapping into more of the warmer air that is to the south of us. That’s when we tend to get our heavy snow.”

She said because colder temperatures have dominated the month there is always the possibility of more snow on the way.

“We’re certainly not going to take that off the agenda quite yet for April, just because it has been such a cold month and we are expecting it to continue to be a cold month,” Lang said. “People shouldn’t put away their snow shovels quite yet. That threat is still there for the month for sure.”

She said temperatures are still running below seasonal values. Average highs for this time of the year are usually about nine degrees Celsius and average lows around minus three degrees Celsius.

“The temperatures are trying to warm up,” Lang said. “But we’re not going to see anything near seasonal at least into the short term of about 10 days.”
