Firefighters tackle early morning house fire

Mar 30, 2020 | 4:55 PM

North Battleford firefighters battled an early morning house fire on 101 Street Monday.

The building was believed to be unoccupied.

“I’m very happy there was nobody inside the structure at the time,” Fire Chief Lindsay Holm said. “So it allowed us to just make sure that fire was not going to spread to any other structures as well.”

He said the building had numerous fire code violations and was vacated and boarded up earlier this month.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 2:26 a.m., and remained at the scene until 9:30 a.m. putting out the final hot spots. About 12 firefighters attended.

The building was located near the North Battleford Library.

“There was no concern of it spreading to the library,” Holm said. “We were concerned that there was a possibility of it actually spreading to the house to the north. But we were able to do a good job of containing the fire in the building of origin.”

He said the building sustained significant fire damage.

“The fire was very well seated in that structure when we arrived,” Holm said. “We did try to make entry into that building but we had to back out because one area of the floor had already failed. So it was too risky to put my firefighters in jeopardy. So we actually took a defensive stance on the fire, and fought it from the exterior of the structure.”

Holm said the cause of the fire is still being determined.
