The Fred Light Museum has opened its registration for the 2020 Honour Our Veterans Banner program.

The program will honour 50 veterans with 25 double-sided banners to be hung from lampposts on 22nd Street in Battleford.

The museum is inviting community members to sponsor a relative or a loved one to be recognized on a banner this year.

The banners will feature the veteran’s name, picture, and the name of their sponsor.

Last year was the first time the Fred Light Museum ran this program and the feedback they received from the community was positive.

Bernadette Leslie, the manager at the Fred Light Museum, said staff members didn’t expect to have so many people apply for a banner last year.

“We had people actually on a waiting list because they didn’t get in on time last year. We had all 50 sold already and more people came along and said they would have bought one,” she said.

Leslie said they expanded the eligibility for a banner for this year’s program. Last year the banners honoured Second World War veterans, but this year they are also accepting applications for veterans of the South African War, the First World War, the Korean War, Afghanistan and other peace-keeping missions.

“This is the museum board’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to all the veterans who have done so much and sacrificed too much for all the freedoms we have today,” she said.

Leslie said this year the banner number is capped at 50. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“The application forms are going fast, so if people are interested in getting their family member honoured then they can contact me at the museum,” she said.

The museum will host an unveiling ceremony on October 30, 2020. The banners will be on display in Battleford for three weeks.
