Stars cap road swing with second straight, top Hawks 3-1 in Nipawin

Feb 16, 2020 | 10:19 PM

The Battlefords North Stars topped the Nipawin Hawks 3-1 Sunday night at Nipawin’s Centennial Arena, to close out their three-game weekend with a pair of victories and cap off their season-series with the Hawks, 5-games-to-1.

Seth Summers, Timon Prexler and Logan Spence scored for the North Stars, while Ben Hiltz picked up two assists and Kristian Lyon made 25 saves on 26 Hawks’ shots for the win.

Caden Benson scored the lone goal for Nipawin in the loss, while Ross Hawrlyuk stopped 28-of-30 shots in the defeat.

Benson’s goal came just 1:18 into the first period on the Hawks’ first shot of the night. Following the tally however, Lyon would slam the door shut for the remainder of the evening in the North Stars’ crease.

Summers’ 13th tied things 1-1 later in the frame, coming on a Battlefords’ man advantage.

Tied at a goal apiece is how the game would remain into the middling stages of the third period, when Prexler cashed in for his seventh. Snapping a shot through traffic, the tally gave the Stars their first lead of the night, at 2-1.

Nipawin did push late with the help of a couple of power plays, but were unable to find the night’s equalizer against the top penalty kill in the league.

Spence served up the exclamation point for his team with his fifth of the season into the empty net to secure the victory for his North Stars at 3-1.

With the win, the Battlefords add to their lead atop the league standings, and are now 44-9-2, giving them 90 points on the season.

At 28-21-4 the Hawks remain in sixth place overall with 60 points this year.

The North Stars will now get 10 days off, before returning to action Feb. 26 against the Broncos at the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt.

Wednesday night’s game will be broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
