North Stars clinch top seed with 4-1 bounce back win versus Bombers

It is said revenge is a dish best served cold, and for the Battlefords North Stars, they served the Flin Flon Bombers a chilled 4-1 loss Saturday night at the Whitney Forum to clinch the top seed overall heading into the postseason.

The win comes in response to a Flin Flon victory the night prior, and closes out the North Stars-Bombers season-series 4-2 in favor of the Battlefords.

Due to a rash of injuries, the North Stars were forced to play Saturday’s contest short two players. Despite dressing just 10 forwards, the team bound together to earn the two points.

Matthias Urbanski, Kaden Boser, Noah Form and Austin Becker scored for the North Stars in the victory, while Ben Hiltz added two helpers and netminder Adam Dmyterko made 34 saves on 35 Bombers’ shots.

Donavan Houle-Villeneuve scored the lone goal for Flin Flon in the loss, while Bombers’ goalie Jacob Delorme stopped 37-of-40 Battlefords shots.

Determined from the initial drop of the puck, the North Stars came out flying. Urbanski’s 22nd opened the scoring, making it 1-0 Stars just 5:36 into the first period, coming on the team’s first man advantage of the night.

Houle Villeneuve’s 30th tied the game 1-1 midway through the first, before Boser put the North Stars ahead for good, late in the opening frame.

Boser’s ninth of the season came with just 57 seconds to go in the period, after Ryland McNinch forced a turnover on the forecheck, feeding Boser out front. Reaching around the Bombers’ goalie, Boser then proceeded to tuck the puck home for a 2-1 lead with his ninth of the season.

At the end of 20 minutes, the Stars led the Bombers in shots, 26-8.

Form’s 11th was the lone goal of the second period, coming off a nice drive to the net by the pinching defenceman, to make it 3-1.

While the Bombers would push late with the goalie pulled, the North Stars stood strong, blocking shots at critical moments, while Dmyterko kept the door shut for his team.

Becker’s 21st of the season iced the victory, as The Wisconsin Wonder cashed in for an empty netter to seal the night for the Stars, 4-1 the final.

The North Stars will now look to build off their momentum heading into their third game in as many nights, Sunday evening in NIpawin.

Sunday’s game will be broadcast on NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 5:45 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 6 p.m.
