Since first opening their doors in 2018, the North Battleford Table Tennis Club has continued to gain momentum, becoming one of the fastest growing sporting pastimes in the region.

Due to the expanding interest, the local table tennis club is hosting their inaugural Table Tennis Open Feb. 20 at École Elementary School.

Director of the club, Mike Garbowicz, said the event will be an opportunity for all interested in the sport to take part, regardless of prior experience, age or skill level.

There will be two divisions: a youth division for players under 18, and an adult division for those 18 and up.

Garbowicz said because the tournament itself will be sanctioned through Saskatchewan Table Tennis, players just have to worry about showing up to participate, with the equipment already provided.

“[Saskatchewan Table Tennis] will have officials that come down from Saskatoon to facilitate the tournament and do the scoring and all the bracketing,” he said. “They’ll be bringing all the tables for the tournament, with all the equipment supplied.”

Garbowicz added for those who may not have tried table tennis before, the Open event at the end of the month is an excellent opportunity to first timers to take in the sport, which brings with it a unique social aspect.

“Table tennis is a fantastic sport to meet new people,” he said. “It can be played at any level [from] recreational to competitive, and it is very social. Its health benefits are also off the charts and you can play low impact, right up to a high-intensity cardio workout. It is open to people of all skills, ages and interest levels.”

The youth division will begin play at 3:30 p.m. with the adult tournament getting underway at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20.
